Deeppura Garh Tablescape

Deeppura Garh Tablescape

These new block printed placemats came in my suitcase for a stay at Deeppura Garh hotel in the Shekhawati region of India. The area is known as Asia's largest open air art gallery thanks to its painted havelis (mansions).

This hotel is one such haveli. It is a living piece of art. Bedrooms are calm white while other rooms are saturated in shades of tangerine, turmeric and cobalt. This jade green swimming pool (pictured) lies at the heart of it all and was the perfect setting for a tablescape bathed in winter sunshine.

Jewellery designer Maria Grazia Baldan happened upon Deeppura Garh after years of neglect. Back in 2015, the ancestral home of Rao Raja Kalyan Singh Bahadur (1886-1967) was being used as a grain store by villagers. Despite the superficial disrepair, "I fell in love immediately,” she told me. It took a team of 150 artisans and workers 5 years to restore the building and grounds from ruin.

New for 2024, this pair of quilted placemats will jazz up any table. Designed with a stripe on the back, it's just as pretty flipped over. Bring them out at breakfast or make the look more special by coordinating them with the Jaipur Bloom tablecloth.

Each began with the rose design drawn by Rosanna which was then cut into a wooden block ready to be stamped onto cotton by the supremely talented craftsmen of Jaipur. Due to the hand-crafted nature of block printing, no two placemats will be quite the same. Minor imperfections make them unique!

Placemats are easy to pop on a breakfast table; they always make things look a little bit special. Not to mention the fact they are practical (protecting this white tablecloth underneath!).

These are block printed with my hand-drawn rose garden design. I love the details of piped edges and a classic narrow stripe on the back too.

Rosanna's first design - Jaipur Bloom - in a new green colourway. This design began with Rosanna's drawing of a rose. It was then carved into a wooden block and stamped onto cotton. Block prints are usually regular and symmetrical in design but this tablecloth is unique with a naturalistic layout of flowers placed at random. Rosanna spent many happy hours with the highly skilled blockprinters getting the scattered roses just so!

The roses are printed in shades of sage and forest green. The tablecloth is white in the middle with roses falling through the hem.

Tablecloths are shipped in specially printed rose drawstring bags made from excess fabric.

Due to this piece’s print layout, no two tablecloths are the same.
