Winter Foliage Tablescape

Winter Foliage Tablescape

A festive dinner table created for Jo Malone London. I took inspiration from their Pine & Eucalyptus scent, layering foliage across the centrepiece and threading it through fairy lights.

It is winter solstice this week with its shortest day of the year. A time to illuminate the dark with candles in all shapes and sizes: from tiny crystal votives to tall pillars. And of course, scented candles!

The Theme

The delicious scent of Pine & Eucalyptus by Jo Malone London was my starting point for the centrepiece. I painted those same motifs onto candles and menus and used forest evergreens as my colour palette.

Rosanna's first design - Jaipur Bloom - in a new green colourway. This design began with Rosanna's drawing of a rose. It was then carved into a wooden block and stamped onto cotton. Block prints are usually regular and symmetrical in design but this tablecloth is unique with a naturalistic layout of flowers placed at random. Rosanna spent many happy hours with the highly skilled blockprinters getting the scattered roses just so!

The roses are printed in shades of sage and forest green. The tablecloth is white in the middle with roses falling through the hem.

Tablecloths are shipped in specially printed rose drawstring bags made from excess fabric.

Due to this piece’s print layout, no two tablecloths are the same.

The Scent

Pine & Eucalyptus candles on the table provide a clean, bright fragrance that doesn't jar with food. But - a new one for this year - I sprayed cologne onto the napkins so there is a burst of perfume when guests place them on their laps. Pomegranate Noir adds a heady, spicy finish to the candles.

£20.00
A pair of napkins in the green Garden Rose print. Hand block-printed roses bloom across a sage base with a forest green outline. Finished with a scalloped edge in mint green.

The design is stamped by hand onto Indian cotton using the ancient technique of block printing, for which Jaipur is famed. It is a craft that has been handed down from generation to generation. No two napkins will be quite the same due to the hand-technique used.

Sold as a pair. The price stated is for 2 napkins.

The Time Saver

Jamie Oliver's Winter Bombe recipe is a bit of a cheat! Slice up a panettone, fill it with ice cream, candied fruit and nuts, freeze overnight then pour over lashings of dark chocolate. I love make-ahead desserts like this.

The Flowers

For the flowers, I interspersed hellebores and the delicate, densely petalled ranunculus for pops of colour. Not only are seasonal flowers a more sustainable choice but they last longer and smell sweeter.

A final note: if all else fails, turn out the lights and max out on candles, tea lights and sparklers!
